Kitchen of the Week: An Alpine Kitchen Where Stainless Steel Is “The Absolute Protagonist”

And the award for most lusted-after material this year goes to: low-maintenance, eco-friendly, gleaming stainless steel. In the early days of 2024, it’s everywhere we look, and nowhere more so than the kitchen, where—as chefs have known for decades—it manages to be durable, hardworking, and elegant all at once.

Take, for example, the kitchen in a family’s holiday apartment in the Alpine village of Courmayeur in northern Italy. Here, stainless steel is “the absolute protagonist,” according to kitchen makers Abimis. Have a look:

And since the apartment is on the top floor of a historic building, the homeowners wanted a kitchen that would bring in a contemporary sensibility but still fit into an “old mountain house”, as Abimis describes it. The company’s Atelier kitchen, done in head-to-toe stainless, fit the bill: clean and modern, but with a final touch—hand-sanding—that gives it a “silky”, patinated, not-too-cold look.
