Currently Coveting: Örsjö’s Handmade Swedish Lighting

Founded in 1948 in Småland, in southern Sweden, Örsjö initially made metal components and falu röda, the red paint synonymous with Scandinavian country houses and barns. In the early fifties, the company started producing lighting that attracted Ikea founder, Ingvar Kamprad: for years, Örsjö kept Ikea’s lamp departments stocked. In the eighties, Örsjö parted ways with Ikea and in recent decades has focused on producing handmade lighting by celebrated Swedish designers past and present (and, admittedly, at prices that are the opposite of Ikea’s).

Örsjö’s lights have elegantly minimalist silhouettes that look at home in just about any room; some work equally well indoors and out. The brand is known in Europe but under-the-radar in the US: we’re happy to report that most of the designs are available in the States through Two Enlighten of Glendale, CA, Örsjö’s North American distributor. Here are eight shining examples.

This ceiling-mounted version is the PJ50.
